Moss Rocks Care Guide

Initial Setup & Transition
Using DriftTech Transition:
- Dissolve the contents of 1 capsule in 1 gallon of dechlorinated or tank water.
- Soak moss rocks for 30-60 minutes before placing in your tank.
- Helps the moss adapt from emersed (air) to submersed (underwater) growth
- Reduces stress and minimizes die-off during the transition period
Placement & Lighting
- Position in moderate lighting initially - avoid direct, intense light. Intense lighting will stress the plants during the first month of growth.
- Moss rocks can be placed anywhere in the aquarium, but due to their size and visual impact, position in the foreground
- Adequate flow helps prevent debris accumulation and algae growth
- Once established, can tolerate a range of lighting conditions
Algae Management
Prevention:
- Moss rocks are naturally prone to algae due to their structure
- Maintain consistent water parameters and avoid nutrient spikes
- Ensure good water flow around the rock
- Keep lighting duration reasonable (6-8 hours for new setups)
Algae Treatment Options:
First step to try: Blackout Method
- Remove rock from aquarium
- Transfer to a small tub/tupperware.
- Cover with aluminum foil and keep away from light
- Spray with dechlorinated water once a day
- Keep in the dark for 3 days.
- Return to the tank and decrease lighting.
First chemical to try: Hydrogen Peroxide Dip
- Remove rock from aquarium
- Mix 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide to 2-3 parts water
- Dip for 30-60 seconds (maximum of 3 minutes), targeting affected areas
- Rinse thoroughly in dechlorinated water before returning to your tank
Stronger chemical: Seachem Excel or other Liquid Carbon Treatment
- IMPORTANT: Delicate plant species, such as mosses, are prone to melting when treated with strong chemicals, such as liquid carbon (aldehydes and peroxyaldehydes).
- Can spot-treat algae directly on the moss rock
- Use a syringe to apply Excel directly to affected areas (with filter off)
- Wait 5 minutes, then turn the filter back on
- Monitor moss carefully, as Excel can affect some delicate moss species
Maintenance
- Gently remove debris with tweezers or during water changes
- Trim any brown or dying portions
- Regular DriftTech Feed+Activate dosing (1-2x weekly) supports healthy growth
- Moss will gradually attach more firmly to the rock over time
Troubleshooting
- Brown patches: Some browning is normal during the first month. If possible, trim away browned and dead areas. Otherwise, leaving the plants alone also works.
- Persistent algae: Try reducing lighting duration or intensity first.
- Moss not growing: Ensure adequate CO2, nutrients, and light
Pro tip: Taking a proactive approach with Transition and maintaining good flow around your moss rock will prevent the most common issues. Address algae early before it becomes established in the dense moss structure.
