Plants Your Betta Fish Would Love and How to Choose the Right Ones
Share
Bettas aren't just fish. They're personalities–curious, territorial, dramatic, and beautiful. The plants in their tank should match that energy. And if you know one thing about bettas, know this: they rest. A lot. Choosing plants with that in mind changes everything.
WHY USE REAL PLANTS IN YOUR BETTA TANK
In the wild, bettas live in shallow, heavily vegetated waters such as rice paddies, slow streams, ponds thick with broad-leafed plants and submerged wood. Plants aren't decorations for them. They're shelter, resting platforms, territory markers, and water conditioners all at once. A planted tank reduces stress, softens aggression, encourages natural behaviours, and keeps water chemistry more stable. Simply put: a betta in a planted tank is a healthier, happier betta.
And come on, who wouldn't want to see a betta lie down on a leaf so comfortably?!
At DriftAqua, we curate plants specifically for Canadian aquarists, and we've seen firsthand which species bettas gravitate toward. Here's how to think about it: 1) Plants that provide resting areas/"hammocks"; and 2) Plants that actively clean the water, making it safer for your pets.
PART 1: BEST PLANTS FOR RESTING
Bettas are surface-oriented fish with heavy fins. They don't constantly swim—they perch, hover, and lounge. The best betta tanks give them plenty of places to do exactly that: broad leaves close to the surface, mossy hardscape to settle on, and gentle cover that feels like home.
1. Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) [Beginner-friendly]

The gold standard for betta resting plants. Java Fern's broad, textured leaves grow horizontally and position themselves naturally near the mid-to-upper water column — exactly where bettas like to hang. They attach directly to driftwood and rock, meaning you can place them precisely where your betta already likes to spend time.
Best for: Mid-tank resting · Low light · Driftwood anchor
2. Anubias (Anubias hastifolia, Anubias nana 'Thick Leaf' & others) [Beginner-friendly]

Thick, waxy, and nearly indestructible. Anubias leaves are some of the firmest in the hobby. Sturdy enough that a betta can genuinely rest on them without the leaf bending away. Attach the rhizome to a piece of driftwood or smooth stone near the surface and watch your betta claim it within days.
Best for: Surface-level resting · Low light · No CO2 needed
3. Pink Lagenandra (Lagenandra meeboldii & varieties) [Intermediate to Advanced]

An underrated gem that deserves far more attention in betta tanks. Lagenandra produces large, often colourful leaves with a slightly wavy or rippled texture—visually striking and functionally excellent as a resting surface. It's closely related to Cryptocoryne yet displays an intriguing iridescence.
Best for: Large-leaf resting · medium to high light · Midground
4. Bushier types of Cryptocoryne (Cryptocoryne wendtii & others) [Beginner-friendly]

Crypts form a dense, cupped rosette of leaves that bettas use not just for resting but for privacy and retreat. They stay compact, tolerate low-to-medium light, and are one of the few plants that genuinely improve with age as the root system matures.
Best for: Cover and privacy · Low light · Midground
5. Driftwood with moss (Java/Anchor/Xmas Moss) [Beginner-friendly]

This isn't a plant so much as a philosophy. A piece of driftwood padded with live moss is arguably the single best resting structure you can put in a betta tank. The moss creates a soft, grippy surface where bettas can settle, hover, and build bubble nests around. It also hosts beneficial bacteria and provides constant, slow biological filtration.
Moss type affects the overall look. For rugged look, opt for Java Moss. For tidy/manucured look, opt for anchor or Xmas moss.
Best for: Hardscape resting · Any light · Biological filtration bonus
PART 2: PLANTS FOR CLEANER WATER
A planted tank isn't just prettier, it's biologically more stable. Certain fast-growing plants are especially effective at removing nitrogen compounds (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) from the water column and converting them into plant mass. For bettas, who are sensitive to poor water quality, these plants are functional as much as they are beautiful.
1. Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides)

Water Sprite is the most versatile plant on this list. It can be used two ways: 1) Rooted and 2) Floated. Rooted in substrate, it grows as a lush, feathery midground plant. Left to float freely, it becomes a surface canopy, and that floating form is where it truly shines for water quality. Floating Water Sprite has direct access to light and CO2 at the surface, which supercharges its growth rate and its ability to strip nitrates from the water. Bettas also adore building bubble nests beneath floating mats of it.
Best for: Nitrate stripping · Floats or roots · Bubble nest support · Easy care
2. Amazon Sword (Echinodorus grandiflorus)

For tanks 20 gallons and up, the Amazon Sword is a powerhouse. Its large root system actively draws nutrients from the substrate, making it one of the most effective biological filters for heavily stocked or heavily fed tanks. Pair it with root tabs for sustained growth. As a bonus, its tall, broad leaves create dramatic cover that bettas use for resting and shelter.
Best for: Root-zone nutrient uptake · 20gal+ · Background statement plant
3. Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)

Yes, it earns a spot on both lists. While it's not the fastest grower, Java Fern is a consistent, low-maintenance leaf feeder that absorbs nitrogen compounds directly through its leaves and rhizome. In tanks where you can't run high-light stem plants, it pulls its weight quietly in the background — and your betta is resting on it at the same time.
Best for: Dual-purpose · Low light · Slow but steady nutrient uptake
PICKING THE RIGHT PLANTS FOR YOUR TANK
Tank size — Smaller tanks (5–10 gal) do best with compact plants: Anubias, Java Fern nana, Crypts, Lagenandra. Larger tanks unlock taller options like Amazon Sword and sprawling Water Sprite mats.
Light level — Most betta setups run low-to-medium light hoods. Every plant on this list was chosen because it thrives in those conditions. Adding high-demand plants without CO2 injection is a fast track to algae problems — keep it simple and let these species do the work.
Substrate — Amazon Sword , Crypts, and Lagenandra are heavy root feeders and need nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs. Java Fern and Anubias feed through their leaves and rhizomes — never bury them in substrate to prevent rot.
Leaf texture — Bettas have long, flowing fins that snag easily on sharp or stiff-edged plants. Every plant on this list has smooth, soft, or rounded leaf edges. Avoid anything with serrated or very rigid leaves.
DriftAqua Tip: Think in three layers. Background plants for height and drama. Midground plants for structure and cover. Surface elements — floating Water Sprite, a mossy driftwood piece near the top — for resting and bubble nest support. A layered tank isn't just prettier. It's a genuinely better environment for the fish.
AVOID THESE PLANTS/DECORS
❌ Unfortunately, to make a quick profit, a lot of fish stores resort to selling dramatic-looking plants that are actually fully terrestrial. Peace Lily roots, Lucky Bamboo, and most "mondo grass" sold at pet stores are not aquatic nor semi-aquatic species. They'll look fine for a few weeks, then rot and spike your ammonia. Always confirm a plant is fully submersible before adding it to your betta's home.
❌ Plastic and silk plants offer none of the biological benefits of live plants. No nitrate absorption, no oxygen, no filtration. They have their place, but live plants do the heavy lifting that artificial ones simply can't.
❌ Sharp, jagged decors that could tear betta fins.
